To backup Gmail go to the Download your data web page, click on “Deselect all” (by default all products are already selected), scroll down until you find “Mail”then add a check mark next to it and click “Next step” to continue.

In the new screen, confirm the file type and size of the archive, how you want to receive the copy of the Gmail contents, then click on “Create export”. Depending on the number of emails sent and received, the operation could take up to days. At the end you will still receive a written communication.

Delete Gmail account

You are now ready to delete the Gmail account. Here is the step-by-step guide:

• Connect to the myaccount.google.com page to access your Google account.
• Select “Data and privacy” from the left side menu.
• Scroll down until you find the header “Data relating to apps and services you use”.
• In the box “Download or delete your data” select “Delete a Google service (remove a service you no longer use)”.
• Enter your account password and click on the button “Login” to log in, so that Google is sure of your identity.
• Click the trash can icon next to Gmail to confirm your choice to delete Google’s email service.
• Type in an email address you have access to to turn it into your new Google Account referral profile. You can choose any service, except Gmail (we also advise against the use of a temporary email. The new email address will be used to log in again.

How to delete Gmail accounts from smartphones

To delete a Gmail account from your phone, open any web browser – Chrome or Safari will be fine – and connect to the address myaccount.google.com. Select now “Data and privacy” in the top menu, then scroll down until you find the header “Data relating to apps and services you use” and in the box “Download or delete your data” tap su “Delete a Google service”.

In the new screen that opens you are asked to log in again: in the field “Enter password” type the password of the Google account to verify your identity, then presses on “Forward” to go to the next step.

At this point, touch the trash icon next to Gmail to confirm the desire to delete the service associated with the Google account. Before proceeding, if you haven’t already, tap “Download your data” to obtain a copy of the contents of the Gmail address you are about to delete (follow the instructions described in the previous paragraph “Backup with the Download your data option”).

Then type in an email address you have access to, so as to transform it into the new reference address for your Google account. The next step is to select “Send verification email”so that Google can verify your identity.

Now wait for the arrival of an email from Google containing a verification link: click on it to definitively complete the verification of the new email address. This is a fundamental step, a prerequisite for Google to delete the Gmail account within the next two working days.

Do I also delete the associated Google account by deleting a Gmail account?

Deleting a Gmail account does not delete the Google account associated with it. Gmail is one of the many services linked to the Google account, as are YouTube, Photos, Chrome, etc. It is as if from a very rich bookshop (Google) you choose to do without a book (Gmail): the bookshop will continue to exist, even if it is deprived of one of its works.
