More than one million Quest 2s sold in Q4 2020, according to SuperData

The SuperData portal, which specializes in carrying out analyzes and forecasts of the video game market in general, has published the alleged sales data of the VR viewers in Q4 2020. As expected, Oculus Quest 2 monopolized the market with more than a million headsets sold in the last quarter of 2020.

Despite being snubbed by Sony, the PSVR continues to be the second best-selling headset, but much more detached, with only 125,000 units. If we think that just a year ago Oculus Quest managed to equalize the sales of Sony’s helmet, this says a lot about how the market is moving. PC-only viewers follow more detached, with Oculus Rift S selling less than Valve Indexdespite the recent price cut.

The Half-Life house, however, can be satisfied with the revenue guaranteed by its viewer, which has been in the top 5 of Steam for 13 consecutive weeks. However, the HP Reverb G2 does not appear in the ranking, which apart from pre-orders and some sporadic appearances on Amazon is not yet available in sensible volumes.

If these numbers were confirmed, Oculus Quest 2 would be the fastest-selling headset of all in a quarter, without considering the devices that are used with the smartphone. The Samsung Gear VR in fact still holds the record as the most sold headset in a quarter, to be precise in Q4 2016 with about 1.4 million units sold.

The SuperData numbers must be taken a bit with a grain of salt, as they are not official: according to Zuckerberg’s recent words, however, the Quest 2 could become the first mainstream VR headset. If we consider a platform with at least 10 million people mainstream, as the Facebook patron describes it, perhaps a million Quest 2 in Q4 2020 is not yet a huge number, considering that there were also the Christmas holidays involved, during the which traditional next-gen consoles have been almost unobtainable. However, the Oculus headset itself was often out of stock, so sales were probably in line with planned production volumes, and Zuckerberg simply wanted to reiterate this.

SuperData then continues by predicting that in 2021 87% of the headsets sold will be standalone, like Oculus Quest 2. And how to blame her, given the inaction of Sony and other manufacturers who will certainly not try to break into the mainstream virtual reality market this year. In 2021 Oculus Quest 2 will probably remain the most sensible choice even for those who decide to use it as a PC viewer, given its hybrid nature. We’ll see what the upcoming Steam Hardware Survey will tell us.

What do you think of these numbers? Are they sufficient in your opinion to bring VR into the mass market, or do you need larger volumes? Let us know in the comments!
