How to create the cover and profile picture on Facebook

Since both the cover image and the profile image are our business cards, better spend a few more minutes following the suggestions described in the following chapters, so as to create a really nice profile to visit and look at. The cover always remains public and it is the only Facebook element visible to everyone, even to non-friends who happen to be on your page.
The cover doesn’t have to be a photo, you can upload any image, for example, you can load a slide created with PowerPoint and saved as an image or a screenshot, a text or many other things.

The right aspect ratio for cover and profile picture

The ideal image to upload as a cover is size 820 x 310 px therefore, any photo, to be displayed correctly, should have such dimensions or, at least, of same proportions. For the profile picture instead we recommend a photo or a minimum image 180 x 180 px, better if slightly larger.
If the measurements are not found and we want to fix it, we recommend using the free FastStone Photo Resizer program.

We upload the photo we intend to use as a cover or profile image on Facebook, we apply the check mark on Use Advanced Options and press on Advanced Options. From this new menu let’s go to the tab Resize, we check the items Resize, In Pixels e Preserve Aspect Ratio and insert the pixel values ​​indicated at the top in the fields New Width e New Height.

We confirm below on OK and, back in the home screen, click on Convert to start converting the photos.

To customize your cover in a fun and creative way, if you are not an expert in Photoshop, you can use the automatic function of the Facebook photo editor, which offers all the tools you need to crop your photo or add two “coincident” photos.
